The Back to School Shopping Guide You Need!

As summer comes to a close and with fall just around the corner, it’s time to get your back to school shopping list in order. As students start prepping to start the year with new clothes, dorm supplies, and even new computers, you won’t want to miss out on the seasonal sales and special promotions; and we know the best way to maximize your shopping experience, especially on a budget! Here is our list of must haves and things to think about before you send your kids back to school this fall.

  • Clothing:
    • As the weather shifts from summer to fall, and maybe even factoring in a summer growth spurt, it’s important to inventory your child’s clothing before the start of the new school year. Make a list of what he or she needs and make sure it is in compliance with the school dress code. Back-to-school sales are in full swing, so searching for coupons and deals is the easiest way to save yourself a few bucks at the register. Summer clearance sales are also a great way to shop efficiently. Check out stores like Old Navy that are offering up to 60 percent off summer wardrobe items. Summer clearance items like these can be also saved for spring.
    • Make some room in your closet for all your new gear by donating any outdated or outgrown clothes. You can even sell some items to make back some money and put it towards other school supplies.
  • School Supplies:
    • School supplies sales are now in full swing! Staples recently brought back its “Less List,” which offers great deals on the basics, such as notebooks for $.25 and folders for $.15. Walmart and Target also have great competitive pricing for school supplies as well, offering discounts on Texas Instrument calculators and other necessities for the year.books-mouse
  • Technology
    • Technology has become such an important part of succeeding in school for most students. Fall is a great time to upgrade any serious outdated technology such as laptops and smartphones. It’s important to consider waiting until late September to purchase smartphones, as most companies launch new items around that time. Laptops, on the other hand, are best purchased in late August with models being discounted 15-25 percent. Discount laptops are making a comeback, meaning you can purchase a quality computer perfect for the student in your life for around $300.
  • Meals
    • Keeping your child eating healthy and staying focused is an important part of school year preparation. Consider healthier meal choices and make-ahead meals this year. There are tons of simple and quick recipes that both you and your child will love. Peanut butter, banana and granola wraps are a great healthy alternative to the daily school lunches, and promise great nutritional value. Explore a new menu each week to find out what is easiest to make and what your child enjoys most! Check out our Pinterest page for some delicious and healthy recipes. If you have a great recipe to share, be sure to enter it in our monthly edition of Chef’s Corner, and you could win a $200 Restaurant.com gift card and featured post on The Reader’s Edge.

Preparations is everything when sending the kids back to school. Take advantage of these summer deals and create a simple menu to keep you kids happy and healthy this year. They might not be happy about going back to school, but they sure will be prepared!
